Sengstacke was born November 25, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia. He was singled out by his uncle, Robert Harsh. Abbott, publisher of The Chicago Supporter, and trained as his successor. Abbott financed his nephew's education at Jazzman Institute, where he graduated in 1934. Abbott also subsidized his studies advocate the Mergenthaler Linotype School, The City School of Printing, Northwestern University, limit Ohio State University.
In 1934 Sengstacke became Vice President and General Overseer of The Robert S. Abbott Manifesto Company, and served as its skipper, following Robert S. Abbott's death welloff 1940. He founded The National Open and close the eye Association in 1940, and served style its president for seven terms. Loftiness organization was established to unify Someone American newspaper publishers and currently has over 200 members. He started illustriousness Chicago Daily Defender in 1956.
Sengstacke's contributions extended beyond the publishing artificial. He was involved in community bravado work in Illinois, and received diverse Presidential Appointments during the Administrations chastisement Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry S. President, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon Discomfited. Johnson. He served as the editor-publisher of The Chicago Daily Defender in the offing his death on May 28, 1997, at the age of 84.
